A “Creating Family Connections” Success Story

Sierra is just fifteen years old with a six month old baby of her own. She was in a crisis and there were no known family members to help her. Thankfully she was referred to Canyon Acres’ Creating Family Connections Program and an extensive search for her family began. The Creating Family Connections Team was able to locate 46 family members including Sierra’s biological mother, father and paternal grandmother. It had been eight years since they had seen each other! The parents believed Sierra had been adopted when their parental rights were revoked by the state. That adoption unfortunately fell through and Sierra was placed in a series of foster and group homes before being referred to Canyon Acres. Canyon Acres arranged a visit and helped reunite Sierra with 13 family members. The staff also held a baby shower for Sierra for which two of her family members flew at their own expense to attend.

Recently, Sierra’s parents and two other family members have expressed a desire to have Sierra live with them permanently. They are awaiting a court decision. By helping to bridge the gap with family members which resulted from miscommunication after the parent’s rights were revoked, Canyon Acres’ Creating Family Connections has created new opportunities and hope for Sierra and her baby’s future.
