Ricki's Story

Ricki had been in the system since the age of five having been taken away from his birth parents due to severe neglect, physical abuse, and exposure to violence and sexual abuse. He was found caked in dirt in a dirty inoperable laundry room with no food or water. Just prior to his 18th birthday, Ricki was referred to Canyon Acres.

An extensive search was conducted by Canyon Acres’ Creating Family Connections team which ultimately led to locating out of state family members. When given this news, Ricki was overwhelmed with a spectrum of emotions. He took time to consider the many options that he now had. Within a week’s time, the Creating Family Connections team was able to organize a meeting to take place in Arizona. Ricki was overwhelmed once again at the initial meeting, when over 15 family members attended to meet him. With the love and support of each family member, Ricki was able to share his feelings, emotions, and thoughts. His family welcomed him with open arms giving him a beginning for a new life.

Ricki currently lives with his aunt, is employed, and is doing amazing things in his new home. In his own words, “I can finally be the kid I always wanted to be.”
